6 Best Places to Shoot Video in Austin

Sometimes, all a scene needs is the right backdrop, and everything changes. The dialogue makes more sense. The actors look more real. The script sounds more natural. Unfortunately, unless you’re building your sets from scratch on a backlot or adding them in post, finding that perfect backdrop is often difficult.

1. The State Capitol

Shooting a political scene? Why not head out to the Capitol building, and get some great exterior shots? You can also shoot on the expansive lawn, or head into the House and Senate Chambers for some more up-close-and-personal shots.

2. Auditorium Shores

Want a great expository shot to set the scene? Then head to Auditorium Shores and get a glimpse of the beautiful Austin skyline. Whether you’re shooting at night, during the day or at magic hour, you’re sure to be in for a treat.

3. Zilker Botanical Gardens

With all sorts of plants, flowers and cacti, the botanical gardens is a great place for a nature shot. There’s even a cascading waterfall for a little romantic touch.

4. The University of Texas

The University of Texas is one of the biggest campuses around, so use that to your advantage. It’s got loads of historic buildings, beautiful architecture and, of course, huge stadiums and arenas. The opportunities are endless on this expansive campus.

5. The Lamar Street Bridge

Need to shoot someone traveling from one place to another? Simply want a beautiful backdrop or some natural water? Then go on over to the Lamar Street Bridge. With beautiful arches and a clear blue river down below, it can be the perfect backdrop for a variety of scenes.

6. Hamilton Pool

While it’s not in Austin proper, it’s only about 30 minutes away, and boy is the drive worth it. With waterfalls, natural caverns and gorgeous, aqua blue water, this is one of the prettiest outdoor spots in all of Texas. It’d be perfect for a romantic setting, a water-themed commercial shoot or even a horror movie.
